Kids at TACS love to sing! Their sweet voices have rung throughout Topeka, this month, declaring the Reason for the Season. On December 6, they visited Lexington Park Assisted Living where residents enjoyed listening to and visiting with the students. Then on December 14, they journeyed over to the Mall where they serenaded busy shoppers. Finally, on December 17, they enjoyed participating in a Christmas musical, called “Because of Love,” with Ms. Glass. Later that afternoon, grades 2-5 played “Silent Night” on their guitars with Pastor Cash at the evening Christmas program.
Fourth grade enjoyed some special music at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. Annually, area fourth graders receive a special invitation to attend the Ballet Midwest’s production of The Nutcracker Ballet. This year was a special 35th anniversary edition. The story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King entertained our fourth graders. We were also excited to see our friend, Zach Kahle, at the performance!
Students had various opportunities to “Be the Hands and Feet of Jesus” this month. They collected coats for children in need; twenty four children will be warmer this winter because of the students’ (and your!) generosity. Wounded soldiers, at Walter Reed Medical Center, received Christmas cards from students. Several times throughout the month, K-1 students could be seen busily making secret Christmas surprises for their classmates. The children’s generosity and selflessness is a joy to behold.
A particular writing assignment this month involved answering the question, “How Are You Going to Keep Christ in Christmas?” Responses included reading/acting out the Christmas story on Christmas morning, decorating with religious ornaments, sharing with those in need, and giving ourselves to God. As students contemplated keeping Christ in Christmas, they also pondered the following quote: Each of us is an innkeeper who decides if there is room for Jesus (Neal Maxwell). As we bid farewell to 2011, and welcome 2012, may we also decide to have room for Jesus in our hearts and lives.
